Geocache Description:

Are you a believer in ghosts? Whether you have had a personal experience with ghosts or not, we think this story will make you stop and ponder about the possibility.

We attended SUNY Geneseo as underclassmen in the late 1980’s and early 1990s. At the time both of us attended, we first met while both staying here in Livingston Hall which is South of here. There were sometimes whispers of a haunting that may have happened in Erie Hall while we attended here, but it wasn’t until recently that we heard the entire story. In 1985, in this quiet campus of SUNY Geneseo, a student named Chris DiCesare began to have a series of unexplainable occurrences while living in suite C2D1 here at Erie Hall. The ghost, who later came to be named Tommy by the people who had these experiences, began to call his name in the evening when nobody else was around. He heard the hauntingly erie sound “Chrisss..” even when he was listening to music on his headphones. Chris desperately tried to explain these experiences as a practical joke or another phenomenon. He was not yet a believer in ghosts and chose not to tell anyone in fear they would believe he was crazy. One day he heard a roommate scream, and the roommate confessed that he heard a strange voice calling Chris’ name. It was at that moment that Chris knew he had to face the reality that he had not been imagining the ghostly spirit. It could no longer be passed off as a hallucination or his vivid imagination.
After that point, both Chris and his roommate began to sense the movement of objects and felt the ghostly presence of Tommy. One day, while eating alone in his room, Chris caught the image of someone in the corner of his eye and knew that Tommy had begun to take shape and appear in front of him. After counting slowly and hoping that the object wouldn’t be there, he bravely turned to face the ghost at the time he had counted to seven. It was not a live person, and it was not his imagination. It was an apparition of a young boy described as between 14-18 wearing jeans and a short sleeved striped rugby t-shirt. Chris’ immediate reaction was to leave the room screaming in fear. It was this time that he told another student, Jeff Unger, who lived in the same dorm about his experiences. Unger not only believed him, but reveled in the idea of a ghost being in the C2D1 and spent time documenting the encounters with photos and tape recordings. On one such tape recording, the words, “Please help me, help me, please!” are reported to be heard from the ghost.
The men in the dorm sought support from local clergy, not just for spiritual guidance but also sought someone who believed them and could confirm that they were not crazy. During this time, several other people experienced the ghost in the C2D1. Chris’ roommate suddenly and without explanation fled not only the Erie Hall, but also Geneseo College all together. It was later reported that the roommate had heard Tommy call out to him to “leave Chris alone.” It was complete fear that led to his choice to leave. After one local clergy man came to do a blessing to rid the spirit from the dorm room, the presence of the ghost seemed to calm for a while, but then reappeared in another location of Erie Hall with similar events occurring to Chris’ friend, Beth.
Many of these stories became folklore and whispers around campus through the years until the summer of 2012, when movie director Mara Katria Lyon, gave a lecture at SUNY Geneseo about an upcoming movie she is creating called, “Please Talk With Me,” that recounts Chris’ and Jeff’s unforgettable experiences at Erie Hall in 1985. Chris and Jeff also came to the lecture to give first hand accounts and to provide evidence that they had saved from their experiences at Erie Hall. The image on the first link below is one printed by the local newspaper, the Livingston County News, that Chris and Jeff provided them as proof of their experiences with Tommy. Upon close examination you can see the rib cage and other bones that appeared in the photograph. It was printed from 35mm film.
This story was also depicted on the SyFy channel’s show called “School Spirits.” It is titled “Dorm Room Nightmare” and has Chris recalling the events of the hauntings at Erie Hall.

As a side note, with further research on the subject we have read about possible links of the hauntings to a suicide of a college student on campus, but some also believe that the ghost could be related to the historic torture and killings that occurred in this area by the Iroquois Indians when they exacted revenge upon the Sullivan-Clinton Expedition during the Revolutionary War time.

About the Erie cache…we wanted to provide an up close experience with the finders being able to see Erie Hall to get a glimpse of where the hauntings occurred. The cache itself is in view of Erie Hall, but not near any rooms or windows so that you can easily search. It should be a quick park and grab so that you can get the cache, get a glimpse of the ghostly presence, and be on your way undetected! Have fun and happy ghost hunting! The FTF should email us and we will send you a $5 Starbucks gift card that you can use the next time you are on campus!
