A mind sport is a sport or a game of skill where the mental component is more significant than the physical. The first major use of the term was as a result of the Mind Sports Olympiad in 1997 described as the Olympics of the mind. Many of the games official bodies which had come together for the Mind Sports Olympiad, formed larger organisations such as the Mind Sports Council and International Mind Sports Association (IMSA). IMSA is an association of the world governing bodies for contract bridge, chess, draughts (checkers), and go, namely the World Bridge Federation (WBF), World Chess Federation (FIDE), World Draughts Federation (FMJD), and International Go Federation (IGF). IMSA is a member of Sportaccord (formally the General Association of International Sports Federations) and was founded 19 April 2005 during the GAISF General Assembly. It is based in Lausanne, Switzerland.
Chess is believed to have originated in Asia. In northwest India during the Gupta empire its early form in the 6th century was known as chaturaṅga (Sanskrit: four divisions [of the military] – infantry, cavalry, elephants, and chariotry, represented by the pieces that would evolve into the modern pawn, knight, bishop, and rook, respectively). According to both chess historians Gerhard Josten and Isaak Linder "the early beginnings" of chess can be traced back to the Kushan Empire in Ancient Afghanistan (G. Josten, "Chess – a living fossil").The earliest evidence of chess is found in the neighboring Sassanid Persia around 600, where the game came to be known by the name chatrang. Chatrang is evoked in three epic romances written in Pahlavi (Middle Persian). Chatrang was taken up by the Muslim world after the Islamic conquest of Persia (633–44), where it was then named shatranj, with the pieces largely retaining their Persian names.
The first official World Chess Champion, Wilhelm Steinitz, claimed his title in 1886. After WW2 chess has been dominated by players from Eastern Europe and former Soviet Union with players as Mikhail Botvinnik, Vasily Smyslov, Mikhail Tal, Tigran Petrosian, Boris Spassky, Anatoly Karpov, Garry Kasparov, Vladimir Kramnik and Veselin Topalov. Players who have challenged the Eastern European hegemony include Bobby Fischer from USA, reigning world champion Viswanathan Anand of India and Magnus Carlsen from Norway. In addition to the World Championship, there are the Women's World Championship, the Junior World Championship, the World Senior Championship, the Correspondence Chess World Championship, the World Computer Chess Championship, and Blitz and Rapid World Championships. The Chess Olympiad is a popular competition among teams from different nations.
Tromsø is hosting the 41st Chess Olympiad in 2014. The Chess Olympiad with 150 participating countries is the world's third largest sporting event. The event takes place in August 1-14, 2014. It is anticipated 1,500 players and millions will follow on the Internet.
To find the cache you must solve a chess related task, but it is by no means necessary to be very good at playing chess. It's enough to know how the knight moves on the chessboard. You need to let the knight take a tour across the board so it steps on each square one time. Some squares are already filled, you have to complete the board. Then you will have a number in all squares, and the coordinates are as follows: Sum up all the numbers in columns
b,
c and
d, and
a2 and
a3. This number you use as
nnn in the north-coordinate. Than calculate the following:
eee = f2 + c3 + d4 + e6 - d8.
The cache is at N 69° 38.nnn E 018° 57.eee. It contains only a logsheet, bring your own pencil.
The task is inspired by a task in a cache in Riga,
GC18YJ7, so if you like this one and visit the Latvian capital sometime, you may try to solve that one too.
