The Heroes Grave at Jalan Taman Budaya was initially set up as a memorial park for 13 gallant men who were executed during the Japanese occupation of Sarawak for helping the Allied prisoners of war (POW) at Sandakan, Sabah and Batu Lintang POW camp in Kuching during the 2nd World War. The remains of 21 brave Iban Trackers / Sarawak Rangers who fought against the communist insurgents in the peninsula during the Malayan Insurgency from 1948 to 1960 were later relocated from various cemeteries in Malaya and Singapore to this site so that it is easier for the next of kin of those warriors who sacrificed their lives so that others have a more peaceful life later on.
The nation’s most decorated war hero Temenggong Datuk Kanang Langkau, who is also the holder of both the country’s highest gallantry medals, Sri Pahlawan Gagah Perkasa (SP) and Pingat Gagah Berani (PGB), was buried at the Heroes Grave after his passing while the latest addition was ASP Michael Padel who was killed during the Lahad Datu intrusion in 2003.
