A Small Cache to be found in Markyate Village.
Enjoy the village of Markyate. The Markyate Road Protest and the coming of the Bypass This geocache was placed to commemorate the 60 anniversary of the protests for the Markyate village Bypass in 1954 Due to the steady growth of traffic around the second world war, Markyate residents formed in 1950 a Bypass Action Committee. Culminating in protests in November 1954 walking the length of the village many residents carrying banners held up traffic to gain recognition for their cause. This was reported in many National Newspapers and consequently work began on the Bypass in December 1955. The Bypass is part of the busy A5 trunk road linking Dunstable to the M1 and St Albans. It now blends into its surrounding but one wonders what the High Street of the village was like when it was the main route North prior to the Bypass and M1.
