First introduced into taro patches near Ahuimanu Stream, O`ahu in 1923, Procambarus clarkii have become established throughout most of the Hawaiian Island chain.
As a child growing up in Hawaii, I can remember looking in the local streams to collect these little crustrations to keep as pets in our aquariums and fishbowls. One has never lived .until one got an unwelcome pinch form the claws of these tiny monsters. It was a pain etched in your childhood memories.
Later in life "revenge" came when we learned that you could actually eat these critters! boiled in water and dipped in butter, the sweet meat brought smiles of satisfaction to our faces.
This large cache is hidden in a spot that is home to these tasty morsels of crayfish flesh.
It can be found about 4 miles up from Komohana street, at the top of the Puainako Extension highway. If you travel up from Komohana it will be on the Puna side of the road. be careful of the steep embankment leading down to the stream floor. Caution should be taken if it has been raining recently, I recommend a good pair of shoes because of the standing water and slippery rocks.
While you are here take some time to look for the little crayfish in the stream, catch a few if you want a quick snack. Watch out for the claws!! The cache is located away from the water watch over the steam.
This is a beautiful place so, take care of the area and CITO the litter. Please place the cache back exactly as you found it. It is tied so the river doesn't wash it away.....have fun and eat one of those critters for me ...OK?
