Geocache Description:

Reivers

The location of the meet is on the border between Scotland/England near to Russells Cairn. Meet up at the designated co-ords at 12:30hrs on Saturday 11th May 2013 until about 13:00hrs or longer if the weather is good and we get chatting as cachers do.

Inspired by Jurassic Parkinson’s, "A brew with a view" events, we thought we would try something similar. We were recently reading the description of a nearby cache, Reivers Revenge - it’s not too far away, and this further inspired us to have this event.

Reivers Revenge was placed way back in 2001 and in all that time it’s only had 65 visitors. It’s not a high peak but it is a ridge and it’s right on the border between England and Scotland. It looks like they had meetings here many years ago. In one story it was to mark the site of the mysterious death of Lord Francis Russell in 1585. He was in a truce meeting with the Scottish Warden Thomas Kerr, a supporter of Mary Queen of Scot's, at the time. During the truce meeting an opposing party shot him with a gun and slew him. There is another story and goes something like this. In 1252 when Henry III persuaded Alexander III of Scotland to define the Border - each appointed 3 Commissioners, one of Henrys was Sir John Russell and it is said that after leaving Cheviot they came to an unnamed hill so Russell called it King's Seat in honour of Alexander who was riding with them that day. They then came to an unnamed cairn so Alexander named it after Sir John Russell - hence Russell's Cairn. The cairn is thought to be Bronze Age though and there are others similar along the ridge.

We hope this will be a more harmonious meeting between cachers from both above and below the borders. Bring along a flask of tea or coffee, and perhaps a picnic. We can swap coins TBs caching stories.

The round trip from north or south of the border depending on where you park should be less than ten miles. But you will be in the hills and so take the correct gear. Boots waterproofs gaiters etc. Hope to see you there.
