Geocache Description:

Hewitt Covered Bridge was built in 1879 and is one of 14 covered bridges still standing in Bedford County.  If touring the standing covered bridges, this would be the hardest to find and take the longest to get to from Bedford.  The cache is rather small and not easily in view - BYOP.  There are many good hiding spots on the bridge, so this should prove challenging.  Be sure to replace the cache exactly as you found it.

The bridge is located in a remote area of Southampton Township just east of the village of Hewitt. It is a Burr Arch structure measuring 88' overall with a 79' span over Town Creek (aka Twin Creek).  The bridge was rehabilitated in 2000 by contractor Merit Contracting, Inc. and engineering firm P. Joseph Lehman, Inc.  The bridge has been reinforced with steel i-beams and plating under the original superstructure, along with refurbishment or replacement of all wood components.   It is open to traffic on Covered Bridge Road.

Hewitt Covered Bridge

The "Covered Bridges Of Bedford Country - Past & Present" (CBOBC - P&P) is a series of caches we will be placing at 69 different locations throughout Bedford County.  Some locations have covered bridges still standing, while others mark the locations of bridges long gone.  The county once had one of the highest counts of covered bridges in Pennsylvania.  After doing some research and learning about the history of the bridges, we decided it would make an interesting cache series.  The number system for these caches goes by township/general location within the county (from the northwest corner to the southeast) and serves mainly to group them for easy locating if you wish to complete the whole series (i.e. if finding #52, you could likely find #51 or #53 easily in the same trip).  The series will not be placed in order of the numbers, and the numbers serve no other purpose.  Most in the series will be traditional caches of varying difficulty.  We hope to make no two exactly the same, to keep the series more interesting and challenging.

Select information and photos used in this series were provide by outside sources.  Special thanks and credit to Trish Kane and Bill Caswell for their work on the Covered Spans of Yesteryear website (www.lostbridges.org) which has been an invaluable resource for creating this series.  Please be sure to visit the website and help support their work preserving the history of these interesting structures throughout the USA.  All information used with permission.  Additional credits may be found in the database listing for this bridge on that website.
