Geocache Description:


The importance of magnets in our everyday life is easily forgotten. However magnetic materials have not outgrown their use in human society since the first compass was made. Starting from the first recordings of loadstone (a form of iron oxide called magnetite) hundreds of years BC, great efforts were exerted trying to understand and describe the ‘magic’ powers of magnetic materials.  Even now magnetism is a constantly evolving and growing scientific research field encompassing the study of ferromagnetic materials, like the loadstones, but also other, more exotic magnetic phenomena.
The coordinates above will lead you to Queens Tower an iconic building which is part of Imperial College London. Imperial College has contributed to the understanding of magnetism for decades. At Imperial the foundations of the modern studies of magnetism were set by Professor Wohlfarth in his work on the itinerant electron model for ferromagnets.
You will need to use the temperatures (in Kelvin) at which Co, Dy, Fe, Gd and Ni transitions from being ferromagnetic to being paramagnetic, the so called Curie temperature e.g. Ni=631K
