This Cache is to commemorate the roller bearing manufacturer British Timken Ltd, which was born out of the American Timken company started in St Louis by Mr Henry Timken in 1898/9.
The first Timken factory opened in Aston Birmingham and production spread throughout the UK from there. The British manufacturing responsibility was licensed to Wolsey in 1920 and stayed under their control until 1927, when Michael Dewar formed a partnership with the Timken Roller Bearing Company of America and brought out the company, which then became known as British Timken Ltd.
British Timken opened its factory in Daventry in 1955. This was the start of the boom years for Daventry and is when the towns industrial growth started to become internationally important. The company in Daventry produced bearings up until 1993 when it closed, although the distribution centre remained open until 2000.
After the closure of the business the land was sold off and became the nearby housing estate with all the road names being associated with the British Timken Company, either directly or indirectly, The nearby sports field was the original British Timken sports field. And marked the Northern boundary of the site.
