Detroit Cinema History:
The Nortown Theatre
7706 E 7-Mile Rd - Detroit

OPEN: 1936 | CLOSED: Late 1970's | SEATS: 1000

The front of the Nortown Theatre (1940's).

Not to be confused with the somewhat larger and better-known Norwest Theatre on Grand River near Southfield Freeway (opened the same year, 1936), the Nortown could seat around 1000, and was designed in Art Deco style by the firm of Bennett & Straight.

The Nortown was named for the area being part of the Village of Norris, Michigan, that existed here from the late 1800's through the early 1900's before being annexed and swallowed-up by the City of Detroit.

It was a nice cozy neighborhood theatre, even though it had a lot of seating for that area.

The theatre was built in 1936 by the firm Bennett & Straight and was designed by E. D. Straight of that same architecture firm and one of it's claims to fame was that it was "Cooled by Refridgeration" and proudly displayed that on the Marquee during the summer months.

It was popular with the neighborhood residents and many of them would attend Saturday matinees every week to "catch the monster movies" in the 1950's.

Times changed and for most of the 1970s, the Norwest was an adult theater, showing filmes of R- or X-rated content.  It would close in the late 1970's until it closed at the end of that decade.  It has since been demolished and is now a strip-mall and parking-area.

This neighborhood movie-house is one of the many that is now just a memory....and will remain a good memory for those that enjoyed it.

IF you have any more information or details on this theatre,
please email me and i will include it in the description.
