Geocache Description:

Akanthou (Greek: Ακανθού, Turkish: Tatlısu) is a village located in the Famagusta District, on the northern coast of Cyprus.

About three miles from Tatlisu just off the new coast road heading towards Kaplica are the remains of an ancient village. The primitive construction of rough limestone blocks is the last tolerably preserved relic of an important settlement.  Today its grounds are over grown most of the debris was once welcome building material for the neighbouring villages.

The relatively large settlement with ancient roots certainly had it’s heyday in the early Byzantine period.  Like all places on the north coast it was also a victim of Arab raids, middle of the 7th Century.  Most residents fled out into the interior except for a few brave who are best known examples Agia Trias and Constantia/Salalmis.

The church dedicated at Panagia Pergaminiotissa is in the medieval style. This is a cross in a square domed building with cylindrical apse.  The church was once completely frescoed with mural paintings, but these were decayed and damaged, the frescoes have been removed.  Apparently near the church is a tiny chapel cut in a rock, there are no architectural features.

Tatlisu Belediyesi have recently been renovating the area for tourist to visit, there is a café and WC available, but there is no information as to when they are open.

We have a local cache guardian who will maintain the cache if required.
