Geocache Description:


Brutalism is a style of architecture that was popular from the 1950s through the 1970s. It grew out of the modernist movement and can be identified by blockish, hard angles and use of unadorned concrete. In fact, the term is derived from the French "béton brut," meaning raw concrete. For a time, the style seemed ideal for government projects as it combined creation of highly functional public structures with low material costs.

Boston City Hall was designed in 1962 by Gerhard Kallmann and Michael McKinnell (who cofounded Kallmann McKinnell & Knowles). Their entry was selected as the winner of a design contest that had over 256 entries. 

There are both critics and defenders of the building and the style in general. Those who support it cite the building's design originality and influence on other buildings. Detractors consider the building dated, cold and austere. There have been several efforts to sell, revamp or otherwise replace the building. None of which have been successful to date.
