The St. Vital Bridge was built over the Red River in 1965. It connects Osborne Street to the north with Dunkirk Drive to the south. The bridge, like the Osborne and Slaw Rebchuk Bridges further north, is part of Winnipeg’s Route 62 – a continuous stretch of north-south roadway that goes by seven different names (Salter, Isabel, Balmoral, Colony, Osborne, Dunkirk, and Dakota).
The bridge is named for the neighbourhood to the south, one of the largest in Winnipeg. The St. Vital neighbourhood/ward is named for an early Christian missionary and colleague of Archbishop Taché, Vital-Justin Grandin, the same man after whom is named Bishop Grandin Boulevard further south.
The cache is located in Churchill Drive Park, but the area used to be known as River Park. From 1893 to 1934, this was the site of year-round public activities, most notably horse racing in warmer months. River Park, the “ancestor” of Assiniboia Downs, covered 130 acres along the “northern” shore of the Red River, from the Elm Park Bridge further west, to Eccles Street to the east. It closed permanently in 1942, being replaced with the present-day park and residential subdivision, Riverview.
The cache should be flood-friendly, but the ground may be under water. The small-regular container contains a pencil, logbook, and, for the first finder, a geocoin. Please replace the container as flush as possible and try to maintain the camo.
Congratulations to JB. for the third of four FTFs in the series!
