A group of cachers have gathered together to place caches along The Hertfordshire Way; a 194 mile circular route along public rights-of-way within the County of Hertfordshire. Rather than caches at every 0.1 mile we have tried to put together interesting hides with cool Bonus Caches.
Leg 3 stretches from Willian to Codicote for 11.8 miles. As you walk the path collect the information you need to find the Bonus Cache at waypoints along the route. We advise that you bring sturdy boots for very muddy terrain and a high visibility vest with you because a couple of short sections require walking along the road.

St Mary the Virgin, Great Wymondley
Cache Details
The small Norman church of St Mary the Virgin has a large apsidal chancel and a 15th century nave roof. The village has evidence of a motte and bailey fortification in the past and still has an elegant Elizabethan house. Henry VIII’s wives are commemorated in the row of thatched cottages each named after one of them.
Leg 3 of The Hertfordshire Way continues through the Wymondley villages. Strangely, Great Wymondley is the smaller of the two! Parking is limited, but there is a fine establishment close to the cache with space for cars. If not walking the whole of the leg then this could be considered a park and grab cache.
If you are not sure which way to go next then study the finger post carefully.
Bonus Waypoints
The following Bonus Cache waypoints can be found close to this cache and en route to the next cache.
BonusC - N51 56.515 W000 14.084 - How many men from the village were lost in the war? The answer is BonusC.
BonusD - N51 55.927 W000 14.038 - How many words in the first line of the plaque commemorating the village's environmental works? The answer is BonusD
To the Next Cache
Take the footpath opposite the public house and take careful note of the arrows to lead you down a narrow path to the side of a garage and between two gardens. This emerges into the churchyard of St Mary the Virgin. Cross the church yard and take the path south across the field to Little Wymondley. This can get very muddy. When the path meets Priory Lane turn right along the pavement into the village. Cross the main Stevenage Road by the pub, turn right and after a few yards turn left into the car park of another pub. Follow the path up the hill to the recreation area.
Other Caches On The Way
The Hertfordshire Way already has plenty of caches hidden along, or close to, its paths. The following can be found between this cache and the next one in the series:
- Oh no! Not another micro in an ivy covered tree! (GC1BWG5) 2/1.5 Traditional by Pink Paisley
There are even more caches in the area, but those listed above should not be too much of a diversion (if any) from the main trail. All caches on, or close to, Leg 3 of the Hertfordshire Way can be found on this bookmark list.
