Geocache Description:

This cache is placed near a Memorial for the 27 crew members of two P-3 Aircraft that perished in a mid-air collision.

On 21 March 1991, two Navy P3 Aircraft from VP-50, stationed at Moffett Field, CA collided and crashed 60 miles west of San Diego. One P3 was arriving into the patrol area to replace the P3 on patrol at 2:26am.  27 crew members perished.  The marker for this accident is nearby; there are several markers and other historical sites and items of interest.

Moffett Field closed as a Naval Air Station following the BRAC of 1995. NASA Ames Research Center took Moffett Field and have developed the location as a NASA Ames Research Park. There are several academic entities, such as Carnegie Mellon and Singularity Universities as well as other Space and Aeronautical related businesses. Still, Moffett Field and the NASA Ames Research Park is a restricted access federal location.  You will need a driver's license to gain entry to the base.  If asked, tell the guard you are going to see Hangar 1 and the Naval Museum on base.  And actually, there is a small Naval Museum near this location.  This cache is in a parking area and is in a small container.  You will need to bring your own writing utensil.  You WILL need to excercise a little stealth... Congratulations to Fishnguy&10sgrl for being the FTF! And to the STF as well, Oaknest and CarlottaP! P3s have a special place in my heart; thanks for sharing!
