Another Dam cache to accompany our hide at Conroys Dam, just down the road.
Frasers Dam was constructed in the same era as a lot of the irrigation dams in the area were and is an important part of the water distribution for the Earnsclugh Irrigation Company.
The lake behind the dam is on considerable size and is a well known but infrequently used fishing spot. According to the locals, there are some very large trout in the lake and the head of the lake is the place to catch them.
Access to the cache site is via Fraser Dam Rd. This road is classed as a dry weather road only and there will be months of the year that this will be very hard to access, if not impossible.
The cache itself is at 545m ASL but the road on the way to the cache passes through 660m ASL. Walking, Mountain Biking or 4WD are the most advisable methods for reaching the dam.
On the day we placed the cache, the water level in the lake was very low, a testament to how dry the summer has been in the area, and also, a testament to how important these irrigation dams are for the area.
The cache is placed in a position that does not require to cross the flimsy fence separating you from a steep drop to oblivion. crossing the fence may give you some great and dramatic views of the dam wall it comes with a serious risk. Be aware of this, especially with children!
The cache itself is a 400ml black sistema container. It contains a log book and a new golf ball for those who enjoy hitting golf balls. Important note though, there is no pen or pencil in the cache, make sure you take one as it is a long way back to get one for signing the log! It shouldn't be visible from any distance but its hiding spot shouldn't be hard to spot. The co-ordinates were +/- 3m.
Enjoy the hunt, the awesome views and the isolation of this beautiful spot, just take care getting there and back and feel free to post photos of the lake in its different seasons.
