Geocache Description:

This is a stealth cache at one of the iconic symbols of Thornaby.

The original legend of the Five Lamps relates to a man by the name of Robert de Thormodbi who, having been wounded in the Crusades at Acre, swore to raise a shrine to the Virgin Mary if he survived his wounds. He did, and to fulfil his vow a shrine niche, lit by five sanctuary lamps, was placed in St. Peter’s Church on Thornaby Green.

The Victorian gas lit Five Lamps were erected in 1874, commissioned by four local JP’s. It is generally agreed that the Five Lamps design was deliberately chosen to commemorate this local legend and the original siting was at the junction of George Street and Mandale Road. Over the years the Five Lamps became an established gathering point for residents and also underwent various design changes and relocations which were often a reflection of the changing fortunes of the town they so uniquely represent.

The current lamps are the renovated replicas of the original Victorian ones and were proudly relocated to their present position in 2010 at the entrance to one of the main routes taking you into the recently regenerated Town Centre. Another apt reflection perhaps!

The cache is a small magnetic nano and is NOT attached to the actual structure represented. The spot is very open so this may be best as a drive by night cache. Easy parking can be found next to the site or at the pub opposite. Don’t forget a pen, and a pair of tweezers and torch may also prove useful. Happy hunting!
