Geocache Description:

Captain's Convention Series

Micro attached to a guardian

Captain Francesco Schettino, also know in the press as Captain Coward and Captain Chicken, was responsible for the sinking of the cruise ship Costa Concordia, when it ran aground at Iosola Giglio, Tuscany, in January 2012 on Friday 13th with the loss of 32 lives. The ship, with 4252 people on board, hit a reef during an unofficial near-shore salute to the local islanders. The Captain, claiming he knew the area very well, had ignored the computer-programmed route. When he had hit the reef, he did nothing to contact the nearby harbor for help, but tried to resume the original course. In the end, he had to order an evacuation when the ship grounded after an hour of listing and partly drifting. Meanwhile, passengers had contacted harbor authorities and vessels were sent to the evacuation rescue which took six hours. The search for missing people took several months with all but two people found.
The Captain had abandoned the ship before all of the passengers were removed and he was later arrested on preliminary charges of multiple manslaughter in connection with causing a shipwreck, failing to assist passengers and failing to be the last to leave the ship. He claims he is innocent of all charges. This abandonment of his passengers is the reason why he has been named Captain Coward by the press.
