June 2002, at 468,638 acres, the Rodeo-Chediski fire was the largest fire in Arizona's history until 2011, it's one of the worst in U.S. history. At one point, it burned 10,000 acres in 15 minutes. A wall of fire 6 miles wide raced over the Mogollon Rim at 20 mph, throwing flames 400 feet skyward. 13,500 structures were threatened and 491 were lost, including 465 homes, 6 commercial properties, and 20 outbuildings. Suppression costs were $43.1 million.
After the Chediski Fire hit Heber/Overgaard the monster wanted Forest Lakes for itself. A finger of the fire headed for Forest Lakes a beautiful community nestled in the Ponderosas on the Rim. Lead by local fireman, firefighters began the mighty task of creating a large fire line that was hoped to fortify and protect this community. Slurry was dropped, back burns completed to help protect Forest Lakes. What is believed by many to be divine intervention the course of the fire was turned by winds sparing Forest Lakes the fight similar to what was seen in Heber/Overgaard.
Congrats to Smudget for FTF!
This cache is on the edge of the fire line, it can hold small swag and Travel Bugs. Parking is tricky but can be found nearby.
