La Chapelle Sainte Godeleine à Wierre Effroy:

Godeleine serait née dans le village de Wierre Effroy entre 1040 et 1050. Ses parents l'ont mariée à Bertulf de Ghistelles (Belgique). Avant de partir, la jeune femme a planté sa quenouille au pied d'un chêne, et c'est à cet endroit que jaillit la source. Son mariage fut l'objet de tensions. Sainte Godeleine finit par s'enfuir pour revenir dans son village d'origine. Son mari la retrouva, la fit étrangler et noyer. Puis il se remaria et eut une fille née aveugle, qui retrouva la vue en se nettoyant les yeux dans la mare où Sainte Godeleine avait été jetée. Après ce miracle, Bertulf se repentit et s'en alla à Rome pour obtenir l'absolution de sa faute. Il partit ensuite en pélerinage en terre sainte et se fit moine à l'abbaye Saint Winoc de Bergues où il mourut. Sa fille fonda un monastère bénédictin à Ghistelles sous le patronage de Sainte Godelina. Au fond de la chapelle, dans un petit coin sur la gauche, il est encore possible de puiser de l'eau.

Godeleine would have been born in the village of Wierre Effroy between 1040 and 1050. Her parents married her with Bertulf of Ghistelles  (Belgium). Before leaving, the young woman planted her distaff at the foot of an oak, and it is in this place that springs the source. Her marriage was the object of tensions. Sainte Godeleine eventually runs away to return in her village of origin. Her husband found her, made her choke and flood. Then he remarried and had a girl been born blind, who found the view by cleaning herself eyes in the puddle where Sainte Godeleine had been thrown. After this miracle, Bertulf regretted and went away in Rome to obtain the forgiveness of his fault. He left then pelerinage in holy land and was made monk in Saint Winoc's abbey of Bergues where he died. His daughter established a Benedictine monastery to Ghistelles under Sainte Godelina's patronage. At the bottom of the chapel, in a small place on the left, it is still possible to draw some water.
