This is the second in a nineteen cache series dedicated to our great friend and near neighbour Bernard Glovell-Raff who has lived in the area for well over 60 years and walks part of this route nearly every day. He has seen the area change over the decades and always has a story to tell when we accompany him. The route is a rough figure of eight and should take 2 hours or so to complete.
Bernard Says:
“If you look west along Bushey Mill Lane, you will see a bridge taking the road over the Stephenson Way link road from Watford to Junction 5 of the M1. Until the early 90’s, the land where Stephenson Way is, was part of the marshy flood plains around the River Colne. Just before the bridge there is a road veering off the left that leads to nowhere. This was the original alignment of Bushey Mill Lane and you can see where it used to run to with a similar stub on the other side of the bridge. A lot of land draining went on before the road was completed in 1993. Opposite the farm building, on the North side of Bushey Mill Lane, you can see a gated entrance to the field. This was the original turning for Berrygrove Lane which was cut-off by the new road and redirected, coming out on the other side of the bridge.”
“Having lived so long in a relatively quiet area, it was quite a shock when we discovered that a new dual-carriageway was going to be built so close. It was no coincidence that within six months of the road opening, I had double glazing fitted to the house for the first time.”
You are looking for a disguised micro container that can be found from outside the field. Please replace exactly as found for others to enjoy.
To get to the next cache in the series:
Now enter the field and turn diagonally right. The field can get quite muddy after rain. During the summer, the actual path sometimes gets lost in the long grass, in which case you are better following the dog walker track which follows the edge of the field to your right.
