Geocache Description:

U-260 was a submarine launched Feb. 9th, 1942 from the shipyards of Bremen, Germany. A month later, it was commissioned and set out under the command of Kapitänleutnant Herbertus Purkhold. Two years later, he was replaced by Oberleutnant zur See Klaus Becker who served until U-260 was scuttled off the southern coast of Ireland on Mar. 12th, 1945. During its three years at sea, U-260 suffered no casualties and served as part of the 8th, 6th, and 33rd U-boat flotillas. U-260 is credited with sinking only one ship during its wartime service: the British freighter Empire Wigtail. It was one of 568 submarines of the U-boat Type VIIC manufactured during World War II. Another Type VIIC was U-96, featured prominently in the movie Das Boot. Incidentally, Das Boot means "the boat" and Boot in German is pronounced like "boat" in English.

This modern U-260 is neither German nor a submarine, but I think of U-260 each time I see it. Extra points if you can spot why I named this U-260! :) The cache itself lies about 20 feet from the sidewalk, but access is not very wheelchair friendly. Nothing needs to be opened to access the cache! Stealth is required since it is next to a very busy street. There is an apartment building very near the cache, so please visit only during daylight hours and approach from the street. Placed with permission from the manager of the apartment complex, so please respect the property and privacy of the residents.

Parking is problematic. You can park to the north along NE 45th St, or you can see if there is available visitor parking in the apartment complex to the east, either a space marked as "visitor" or a parking space that is uncovered and unnumbered. A third option is to park in a nearby Microsoft lot, but please do observe all parking restrictions, although you should be fine on the weekend.

Log only cache, so bring a writing implement.
