Geocache Description:

An casual cache in the lesser examined Panhandle of GG Park

The Panhandle was the first prototype of Golden Gate park, but the rather lush foliage of both didn’t come easy. In 1859, this was all sand dunes from here to the ocean. Because of the winds, nothing could be grown, and this section of the peninsula was known as “Outside Lands.” It took an initial planting of barly, then se-bent grass and yellow lupin- until the dunes were stabilized enough to hold a layer of manure on it’s skin.  On top of this it was Monterey Pines, Eucalyptus- any tree that would grow fast- until the ground finally stayed put, and could be properly cultivated. SF is now covered from Bay to Breakers, and what were once ‘Outside Lands” are now just about the geographical center of the city!
