For Whom The Cache Tolls Traditional Cache
2max: Well gee, we checked on this one today and were quite surprised to find that someone has pinched the hand-crafted outer shell that hid (and protected) the plastic container containing the logbook. The thief must’ve had somewhat of a conscience as they very kindly left the plastic container behind at the base of the marker post... but seriously? I guess someone was so impressed with mr 2max’s stone-masonry skills that they just couldn’t resist taking it home with them. ☺️ Ah well, that’s the way it goes sometimes! Archiving.

This cache brings you to a pretty signifigant site in local government on the banks of the Tarra River. You are looking for a small sistema container that has been well camouflaged. Please use stealth as there is a house nearby. The plaques on the monument also give a brief run-down of why this site is signifigant, so have a quick read while you're here.
In 1860 a series of tollgates were proposed at strategic points to help raise funds for Road Board, which had been formed just 4 years earlier. This site was chosen as it was along the original (and main) route from Port Albert to Sale. A tollgate and house were erected the following year in 1861.
However road travellers to Sale could easily by-pass the tollgate altogether by using the road which passed through Alberton. Unfortunately the only people left being taxed were the residents of Tarraville, who needed to cross the bridge to get to nearby Port Albert. The whole thing ended up being an embarrassment for the Road Board who copped a lot of flak over it. In their Nov 20th 1863 edition, The Guardian newspaper launched an attack on the Road Board, calling them "vultures" and declaring them to be a "vampire sucking the life blood of the constituents." Ahh, local government getting it wrong isn't a new invention!
Congratulations pfgkfg - FTF. (And welcome to the wonderful world of Geocaching!)
