Geocache Description:

This is the eighth in a nineteen cache series dedicated to our great friend and near neighbour Bernard Glovell-Raff who has lived in the area for well over 60 years and walks part of this route nearly every day. He has seen the area change over the decades and always has a story to tell when we accompany him. The route is a rough figure of eight and should take 2 hours or so to complete.

Bernard Says:

“When I first moved to the area, the expanse of what is now Knutsford Playing Fields had a stream running diagonally from this point towards Loates Lane (now Radlett Road) before turning eastwards again to rejoin the river. The stream was culverted and covered in the 1950’s and the fall reversed, so instead of the water flowing out from the river at this point and rejoining it further south, run-off from rainwater drains now join the river here. With the stream covered over, the rest of the ground was levelled and it now boasts two rugby pitches.”

“Although not a rugby man myself, during the war, I used to play a lot of football. The leagues were suspended in 1939 but some teams still played friendlies semi-regularly. During this period, I turned out for a team in Wealdstone, near Harrow, and used to get the train down to the games. Rather than walk to the nearer Watford Junction station, I used to go to Bushey & Oxhey (now just Bushey), partly to warm-up before the game and partly because during the latter part of the war, it was known as Ampersand Station. All station signs were supposed to be painted out and in this case, the “Bushey” and the “Oxhey” were removed but the ampersand remained, which used to tickle me every time I went there.

You are looking for a silver 2-inch long tube.
