Geocache Description:

A small camouflaged tube for which stealth is required since the cache is close to the village and the area is much frequented by dog walkers.

A group of cachers have gathered together to place caches along The Hertfordshire Way; a 194 mile circular route along public rights-of-way within the County of Hertfordshire. Rather than caches at every 0.1 mile we have tried to put together interesting hides with cool Bonus Caches.

Leg 3 stretches from Willian to Codicote for 11.8 miles. As you walk the path collect the information you need to find the Bonus Cache at waypoints along the route. We advise that you bring sturdy boots for very muddy terrain and a high visibility vest with you because a couple of short sections require walking along the road.

Cache Details
The village of Whitwell sits on a tableland spur of the Chilterns, at about 400 feet above sea level. The surrounding ground is mostly clay and your boots will attest to this in wet weather! You’ll see the fields littered with flints and may be lucky to find something more exciting, as Roman coins have been found nearby.

The village contains a number of early brick and half-timbered houses, several of which are of the 18th century.

With the River Mimram running north-west to south-east through the village, it is particularly noted for its production of prime watercress.

The cache is a traditional hide - originally in a trio of trees (hence the cache name). In July 2013, two of these trees were removed, so we've relocated the cache to a nearby sheltered footpath. We think the name is still appropriate though - it just needs to be pronounced differently, as a lament to the two missing trees! You are in a busy area, so stealth (or a dog) could be needed.

Bonus Waypoints
The following Bonus Cache waypoints can be found close to this cache and en route to the next cache.

BonusL - N51 52.356 W000 16.834 - There are some figures etched onto the wooden telegraph pole here. The 2-digit number above the "B" is BonusL.

To the Next Cache
The track heads south-west away from GZ towards a telegraph pole in the field. Here you turn left in the direction of 10 o'clock and keep on this bearing as you cross a farm track. The trail crosses another field and you rise slightly before dropping down towards a gap in a field boundary hedge.
