[ENG] Remains of the Sawmill of Varjakka - traditional cache in a historical environment on the island of Varjakka
[FIN] Kätkö sijaitsee Varjakan saaren sahateollisen historian keskipisteessä. Saha oli 1920-luvulla pohjoismaiden suurin, mutta sen toiminta päättyi 1929 tapahtuneeseen pääakselin katkeamiseen. Toisaalta myös suhdanteet olivat tuolloin huonot ja lisäksi oli havaittu että puutavaran laatu kärsi merivedessä tapahtuneesta uitosta. Niinpä saha siirtyi mantereelle, Pateniemeen Oulun pohjoispuolelle. Jäljelle jäivät kuitenkin sahan betoniset perusrakenteet.
Noudata varovaisuutta alueella liikkuessasi - joidenkin betonisten rakenteiden vieressä on jyrkkäreunaisia kuoppia, jotka talvella voivat olla osittain lumen peittämiä.

Sulan veden aikaan saarelle pääsee myös Varjakan venesatamasta kapulalossilla.
Kapulalossin avaimet saa Warjakan Bar&Grillistä. Varaukset tehdään soittamalla Warjakan Bar&Grillin numeroon 040 1519987 klo 12.00-21.00 tai muina aikoina numeroon 0500 419951. Avaimet noudetaan Warjakan Bar&Grillistä osoitteesta Muikuntie 2, 90470 Oulunsalo.
[ENG] This cache is located in the heart of the industrial history of the island of Varjakka. The sawmill was the biggest in the Nordic countries in the 1920’s, but it’s operation was ceased in 1929 when the main shaft of the sawmill was broken. By that time, it was also a recession regarding demand of the timber, and it was also observed that the quality of timber was suffered when the logs were floated in the seawater. The equipments of the sawmill were transferred to sawmill of Pateniemi (to the mainland, on the northern side of the city of Oulu). Only the concrete bases of the sawmill were left on the island.
Be cautious when moving on this area; near to some of the concrete structures there are steep pits, which can be partially covered by the snow in the wintertime.

During the open water, a manually movable small ferry is available.
