As you walk northwards, you will see in the trees ahead chimneys of a significant-looking house. This is Benedict Otes, having an unusual chimney of a central original chimney stack with 6 grouped octagonal shafts on a rectangular base with a sunk panel, inscribed with the date 1644 above the initials JCSC. The west end has a stack with 2 shafts. There is also the remains of a moat, showing its significance as one of nine manors of Writtle.
