Geocache Description:

Part of a series set out around this lovely English parish. The walk is just over 3 miles and passes through fields and lanes. It is suitable for families although there are several stiles - buggies probably not suitable. Parking in the street near the church. This part is suitable for cache and dashing, although it's recommended that you walk the whole route to cut down on traffic in these quiet country lanes.

As you walk northwards, you will see in the trees ahead chimneys of a significant-looking house. This is Benedict Otes, having an unusual chimney of a central original chimney stack with 6 grouped octagonal shafts on a rectangular base with a sunk panel, inscribed with the date 1644 above the initials JCSC. The west end has a stack with 2 shafts. There is also the remains of a moat, showing its significance as one of nine manors of Writtle.
