Geocache Description:

Ráth Cruachan or fort of Croghan. The cache is hidden close to a great big mound which is part of the Rathcroghan royal complex, and ancient capital of Connacht. It’s just one of many monuments in the area, and is comparable to other similar sites around the country such as Tara and Eamhain Macha.
There are sites dotted around here of differing ages spanning 5000 years from the Stone Age to Bronze Age, Iron Age Celtic to early Christian and into the early medieval period.
It features strongly at start of the Táin Bó Cúailnge saga which tells the story of a famous cattle raid by Maeve in order to have the beating of her husband as they were equal in all things apart from one thing, Ailill her husband had a prize bull.
Maeve decided she needed a better bull and the only one comparable, a brown bull was to be found at Cúailnge in Ulster. The owner naturally didn’t want to part with it so Maeve assembled an army and set out from here to take it, and started a war with Ulster. the rest is legend and history.

Much more can be discovered about Maeve and all of the sites at the nearby Cruachan Aí heritage center in the village of Tulsk.

In 2010 the complex was nominated to the UNESCO World Heritage Status list.
