Geocache Description:

Just off the Sweet Creek Falls trail, a rest area located between Metaline and Ione Washington on highway 31. The rest area  has plenty of parking, pit toilets, and paved trails to several picnic sites. The last portion of the upper trail to the falls is not paved, but just a short distance further for a view of the falls. The lower trail also takes you to a great view of the falls with very little elevation gain.

The KKLNDike Explorers had the privilege of hiding the first cache to be placed in this area which was INWCBSA Treasures of Scouting Northern Star 2. The cache had a good three year run with 76 finders. This area is just too beautiful to not have a cache so we have placed a cache in a different location giving all geocachers and even the 76 finders of the orginal cache a good excuse to come enjoy the area once again.

There are several waterfalls on Sweet Creek, the closest is a short walk up the trail. Up the road to the north  is Metaline Waterfront Park with picnic areas, a covered picnic pavilion and barbecue pit, playground, boat launch, swimming, fishing and restrooms. To the south is the Eagles Nest Viewpoint , a highway pullout where you can view Bald Eagle nests across the river.

The settlers depended on Sweet Creek’s steady flow for their survival. They drank from its depths, caught trout below its falls, and turned its water onto their gardens and pastures. In 1913 they contracted with Appel Brothers, a local logging company, to cut cedar poles from their properties. The company built a log flume stretching nearly three miles up Sweet Creek. Over the next two years the stream flushed thousands of poles down the flume to the river, where they were barged across and hauled up the steep bank by an “endless chain” hoist, to Appel’s spur on the railroad.
