A small cache placed in a popular spot in the open forest. You will be near the villages of Hyde, Frogham and Abbotswell.
There are numerous parking places, including Abbotswell, the village school and, nearest, Gorley Lynch. Hampton Ridge above Ogdens offers stunning views across the forest towards Hasley Hill and beyond and can be made into a walk to Fritham, taking in several caches en route.
Hyde is a rural parish consisting of several hamlets and tracts of heathland in the New Forest. Almost the whole of the parish is within the boundary of the New Forest National Park. It includes the hamlets of Blissford, Frogham, Furze Hill, Hungerford, North Gorley, Ogdens and Stucton, as well as tracts of New Forest heathland centred around theLatchmore Brook to the east. The parish has 383 occupied houses, an infant/junior school, a village hall, and two pubs.
For a quick walk of about 800 metres each way, park in the small gravel parking area at Gorley Lynch. It s reasonably good walking on firm tracks to the cache, but the final 30m is in a wooded area of scrub and rough ground and would not be suitable for wheelchairs.
For a larger parking area and walk around the villages, choose the area outside of the village school, overlooking the village cricket pitch. Quite idyllic. The school parking area can be quite busy in term time, but is usually empty at the weekend and holidays. Take a walk along the track (past the phonebox) to Hyde Village Church; a lovely small church which serves the local linked villages well. The church of the Holy Ascension was built in 1855, and is of red brick with stone dressings and consists of chancel, nave, north vestry, south porch and western turret containing two bells.
