For rock and roll aficionados and geocachers alike. This is the first in a series of caches I'm creating that will bring you near iconic rock & roll album cover site locations around NYC. Due to the geocaching rule that states a geocache must be more than .10mile (528 feet) from any physical part of any other cache, I had to put this on a street other than intended. Nevertheless, after the find, it's a short stroll over to N 40° 43.921 W 074° 00.131 (Jones St.) ...The street where Bob Dylan was photographed (with his g/f at the time) in 1963 for The Freewheelin' album cover.
This poignant photograph was taken by Don Hunstein, a staff photographer for Columbia Records. Dylan and his gf (Suze Rotolo) lived around the corner at 161 West 4th Street in a fourth floor walk-up. Prior to moving to Positively West 4th Street, Dylan as a still no-direction-home-rolling stone stayed off and on at 1 Sheridan Square (off Seventh Avenue and Christopher Street). Shortly after the photo shoot, Dylan moved on to Joan Baez and Rotolo no longer had an interest in being a mere “string on his guitar.” They officially parted by 1964, but this photograph remains a bittersweet testament to being young and in love in Greenwich Village.
Feel free to post a picture of yourself in the gallery miming the pose. For the pose, stand in the middle of Jones street (caution please) across from building #7 or #9, and face west 4th street. Word has it that Dylan was trying to emulate this shot of James Dean
