Geocache Description:

The forgotten Darran Glacier

A glacier is a large mass of ice with a definite basin. The glacier itself is never firm, it is continuously moving, that is because of the structure of the ice, hill slope and the shear stress. With this huge mass of ice, a glacier has enough power to sculpture landscapes surrounding the mountains.

Glaciers are the biggest freshwater reservoir and after the ocean the biggest water reservoir in the world.

The word Glacier originates from the Latin word, “Glacies”, which means, “Ice”.

For over 15.000 years ago a massive river has been flowing to this particular point. The source of this glacier was in the Darran Mountains. The main Ice flowed to Martins Bay and sculptured the spectacular landscape of the Hollyford Valley.

The Hollyford Valley like all other valleys in the World was created by erosions and denudation. Water or ice transported material and that shaped the ground. Glaciers carved the U- shaped valley, and the reason why the valley is so wide and deep is because a glacier has the possibility to transport bigger materials such as boulders.

The hill slope of a U- shaped valley has steep gradients and a flat bottom. The abrasion of a river valley follows the flow of the streams. The hill slope of V- shaped valley has a flat angel.

A Hollow is a small valley or dry streambed. If a glacier- valley has his end inshore water, this is called a fjord.

There are even some valleys that were built by two or more erosion processes.
