Geocache Description:

This is intended to be a cycle-cache.  So bring a bicycle and bring your cycling family – it will make your search quicker and more fun!

Besides healthy exercise, bicycling is an environmentally-friendly form of transport. One bicycle on the road means one fewer car to add to the congestion and pollution.

Note: The cache is not located at the above-listed coordinates. To get to GZ, you must calculate its coordinates by paying attention to road-signs.

There is a type of cyclists for whom the title of this cache is most applicable.  It’s not those fixed-wheeled frenzies we call cycle-couriers in our CBDs (albeit they should behave, too).  It’s the very young cyclists who are often unaware of road-rules and insufficiently mature to recognise the dangers that cycling presents to others and to themselves.

For them, early guidance and training is the key and many facilities have been constructed for this.  This cache presents the recent completion (Feb 2013) of a children’s cycle-training track.  Located in Heffron Park (the largest outdoor recreation facility in the City of Randwick), the training track provides a safe, fenced-off, series of traffic manoeuvres complete with road-signs, pedestrian crossings, a round-about and even a traffic light; just the thing to teach young cyclists how to ride safely on the road.

But beware when cycling here as skill levels vary – so heed the cache title!

There are picnic tables, barbeques, plenty of parking and a playground nearby.  So bring your young budding Robbie McEwan’s and Cadel Evans’s.  If you visit on a Saturday afternoon or (in Summer) Tuesday evening, you might see the Olympics and Tour-de-France hopefuls of the local cycling clubs (Randwick Botany and Eastern Suburbs, who have their clubhouse just a short distance away) as they compete around the criterium circuit.  (Be very careful if you go near the criterium track when a race is on. Even on the flats, a bicycle can travel at well over 60 kph – and very quietly!)

Enough cycling advocacy ... on to the cache.

To obtain the coordinates of this cache, you need to complete two circuits of the training track.

Join the track at the traffic light.  Proceed clockwise around the main/outer circuit.  Make a note of every road-sign.

When you have completed one lap (finishing back at the traffic light), turn around and proceed anti-clockwise around the same/outer circuit.  Again, note all the road-signs along the way.  Remember it is illegal to U-turn at traffic lights.

Each road-sign has been given a numeric value according to the table below. Add up the values (careful with the negative numbers) of all the signs in the clockwise direction and you will have the decimal minutes portion of the Easting ordinate (i.e. the XXX in E 151° 14.XXX'). Likewise, the sum of the values of all the signs in the anti-clockwise direction will give you the decimal minutes portion of the Southing ordinate (e.g. YYY in S33° 57.YYY').  Note: The sum is ‘right justified’.  That is, if you end up with a two-digit number, place a zero to the front (left) to make a 3-digit number for the decimal minutes.

Table Updated 12th January, 2025: Some vandal has stolen some of the signs.  The table of values has been adjusted to match the remaining signs.

GZ is less than 200 metres from starting coordinates.

The cache is only large enough to hold geocoins and very small TBs.
