Geocache Description:

The first train of the Cape Fear and Yadkin Valley Railroad rolled in to Mount Airy on May 28, 1888.  Industries such as tobacco, furniture, textile and granite began to grow as the railroad made possible the shipment of goods in and out of Mount Airy. During the nineteenth and half of the twentieth century, the railroad depot, across the river, was one of the most important buildings in a small town.

This cache, part of the "Geocaching for History" program, was researched and placed on the Emily B. Taylor Greenway by the Mount Airy Museum of Regional History as part of a grant funded by Kids in Parks - Track Trails - Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation, Blue Cross Blue Shield North Carolina Foundation, and the North Carolina Humanities Council. The goal of this program is to encourage physical activity and exploration of the history of our community.
