March Madness - RED Traditional Cache

This time of year, basketball fans are eager to watch college teams compete in the annual NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship. Not me--this time of year my eyes are glued to the mountains instead of the television, looking for new trails and places to explore as Winter gives way to Spring. This ridgeline is just one of those places. It turned out to be one of my favorite hikes above Long Bench and North Ogden.
RED is just a silly nickname having to do with the color of the Mardi Gras beads placed in the cache. It can be a fun reference also, as you climb the ridge. "How far to RED?" you might ask. Good question, as it sits at 6,497 feet, about 1,250 feet higher than the Bonneville Shoreline trail.
The trail to RED is a cool ridgeline walk on decomposed rock, an easy path with great eyelines all around. My Dal Leo and I saw a large herd of deer descending the rocky slopes below us, on the north side of the ridge. Up ahead is an awesome plateau leading straight to the cliffs, where mountain goats stood watch over us. Enjoy!
