Geocache Description:

1491 - 1557

First European to travel inland in North America.  He claimed what is now Canada for France, and he was also the first to document the name 'Canada' to the territory on the shores of the St Lawrence River.  The name deriving from the Huron -  Iroquois word 'kanata' or village, which was incorrectly interpreted as the native term for the newly discovered land.
