A fairly easy to find cache to commemorate this location. Have fun and learn something as well!
Lexington Elementary has been in existence for 154 years. The original Lexington School location is now submerged in Lexington Reservoir. The school moved to this site in the 1950's. Ten years ago, all the schools in Los Gatos were scheduled to be remodeled. Lexington was #1 on the list to be rebuilt, but due to politicking and other actions it was decided that the schools down in "The Flatlands" of Los Gatos were more important, and in turn they were rebuilt before Lex. Most of the schools in the Flatlands were rebuilt with exorbitant materials and inflated designs and were finished in excess of their budgets. (one by a factor of nearly 100% over budget) This excess ate into the funds that were ear-marked for Lexington, so by the time it came to rebuild this school, now last on the list, there was insufficient funds to do so. To make up for this imbalance, Proposition B was drafted to Re-build Lexington with new taxes. This legislation passed by a wide margin and the voters assumed that Lex would be built as promised. Unfortunately, the powers that be had other plans. Lexington, it was determined, was located on "unstable" ground and would not be re-built on site as promised. The loophole that was paraded out was "The wording of the Proposition said the school would be rebuilt, but it didn't say WHERE it would be rebuilt." In no uncertain terms, the school board said publicly that the existing Lexington School project was dead. The plan was to relocate the new Lexington 6 miles away in the Flatlands of Los Gatos, thereby increasing the property values in town, pirating away the IB Teaching Curriculum and destroying the only community meeting place in the Lexington Hills. To combat this, the parents of Lexington rallied together and overnight the "SAVE LEX" group was formed. For nearly two years the Save Lex group met and pooled their resources to act as a watchdog group to force the LGUSD to follow all legal avenues and prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that it truly was unsafe to rebuild Lex in place. After many school board meeting battles that went into the wee hours of the night, the Save Lex group was victorious in forcing the proper testing be done to prove once and for all that the land where Lex currently stood was safe. The test proved beyond a doubt what everyone already knew: Lexington was safe. When the dust settled, the parents of this community were the victorious underdogs in what was often a heart-wrenching battle. While everyone is sad to see the Old Lex buildings go, it will be a great day in 2014 when the New Lexington opens on this very site. Never let it be said that you cannot fight the powers that be and win. Since it was relocated on this site in the 1950's, the Lexington School motto has been: "Often outnumbered, never outclassed!"
