Geocache Description:

We wanted to continue our “Hare” series, so we decided to hide a few up here.  Tonto Forest offers some spectacular winding dirt roads and beautiful views.

Take a ride on the Big Maggie May Trail. Four wheel drive is recommended. We rated the overall terrain a 3 if you’re coming from Seven Springs, but add another star if you’re planning on taking the Table Mesa road from I-17 as that road is rougher. The trail has some good climbs and descents, and it follows along Big Maggie May Creek.

The trail leaves Camp Creek and is marked FR 468.  You will eventually come to a fork in the road and the trail marked FR 468 will turn left.  Continue on FR 468.  This trail will descend to a creek and you will find and old stone cabin.

Unfortunately, the cabin was in the path of the Cave Creek Complex fire.  In its early days, the cabin had a tin roof.  You will notice that trees were incorporated into the structure of the cabin.  The history is unknown as to what this cabin was for, but we suspect that it may have been a miner’s camp since there is a mine on FR 1940.

This is a great spot to have a picnic, or camp.  You’ll enjoy the views of the creek trickling beyond the cabin.  There is a short hike to cache. Respect the desert!  Watch out for critters that bite, and don’t forget to bring water.
