Bridge Series: St. Norbert Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Stonagal: The takedown continues. Off work until the move, so picked this one up this afternoon. This one seems to go missing periodically, so I wanted to recover this one before leaving. Thanks to all who found any of the three versions of this one!

Geocache Description:

PLEASE BE ALERT AND EXERCISE CAUTION WHEN CROSSING PEMBINA HIGHWAY!  Parking is available along Avenue De L’Eglise.

New container as of June 11, 2013, a couple meters east of the posted coords. Please do not remove the container, but just open it and access the log.

The bridge in St. Norbert that crosses the La Salle River was first constructed in 1900.  At that time, the bridge was located just downstream (to the southeast) at the end of Rue Campeau.  Back then, the intersection of Campeau and De L’Eglise was the “downtown” of the French-speaking community of St. Norbert.  Today the only evidence that remains of this once bustling area is an old building with the name “Banque D’Hochelega” somewhat visible on its façade.

In 1922, the bridge was moved to its present location along what was then called the Jefferson Highway (aka the Pine-to-Palm Highway), giving the highway more direct access to Winnipeg without having to detour through St. Norbert (at that time, the two communities were several miles apart).  This had the effect of directing commercial activity away from Campeau & De L’Eglise, which had a negative economic impact on the whole community.

In 1996, the bridge got a second span and gave rise to its current name, “The Bridges of St. Norbert”.  Just west of the vehicle bridge is a train bridge built for the Canadian National Railway’s Letellier line, first constructed in 1887, which gave Manitoba rail access to the United States even before it was connected to the rest of what would become Canada.

The Bridges of St. Norbert is the easternmost bridge to cross the La Salle River, as the river empties into the Red River one kilometre downstream, a short ways north of the Red River Floodway.

Congratulations to V A for the seventh of seven FTFs in the series!
