Ghost Road to Atlantic City
South Pass was used by United States Steel to reach their Atlantic City iron ore mine. This 76 mile railroad was operated between August 1962 and October 1983. The crossing was at 7550' and the mine was at 8430'.
America's railroads built 31 crossings over the Divide, of which 10 other crossings remain in use.
For this series, I'll recommend doing the first 7 caches by Walking. Driving around takes MUCH longer than the walk would take. There is NO East access to those either. From this cache, if you continue South another .25 mile, you'll run into ACTIVE Rail. The train DOES come up here every Tuesday and Thursday. The crew Tries to get up top(end of rail) and back to downtown Rock Springs in the morning before lunch. If you get lucky, you'll see that they use EVERY INCH of rail.
