About a year and a half ago, we hosted our son's friend Sem, who was visiting from Germany. I asked him if he'd be interested in accompanying me on a 2-day geocaching road trip to SW Missouri and eastern Kansas, and he readily agreed.
As we passed through the small towns in the region, we frequently encountered locations of a common regional small-town variety store chain. Each time we would see one, Sem would say with a laugh, "Ah, der General!" (Phonetic spelling of the German pronunciation would be something like "Ah, dair Ghen-er-RAHL!" Be sure to pronounce the "Gh" as a hard "G", as in goat.)
Now Sem speaks very good English (he was an exchange student in Washington state for a year), but I never did quite grasp the humor in the name of this chain of stores. Nevertheless, I still can't pass one by without thinking to myself: "Ah, der General!"
