Geocache Description:

One of a series set out around this lovely English parish.  The walk is just over 3 miles and passes through fields and lanes.  It is suitable for families although there are several stiles - buggies probably not suitable.  Parking in the street near the church.

Now on the final leg of the walk, this cache is close to Roxwell Brook. The pony paddocks on the other side of the stream belong to the manor house known as Dukes - you may have seen it at the beginning of your walk at the far end of the village.  A manor house on this site is mentioned in Doomsday Book. The present house was built in the 16th century and was altered and added to in 1666 by Thomas Arthur Crush.  It is said that the workers on the roof saw the Great Fire of London. There are cross wings on the north and south ends and 17th century gabled additions on the west side. The east side is almost completely altered, with 20th century fenestration and sham timber-framing. The house retains its original shape and is picturesque.  It has spectacular chimneys, and is grade II listed.

In 1841 the farmer at Dukes was listed as Harriet Josling.  She had a 13 year old servant called Fanny Green, and another 13 year old, Jacob Day, working as an agricultural labourer.  How times were different then!
