In 1876, Melvin Dewey created a proprietary library classification system. It has been revised and expanded through 23 major editions since its creation. This system allows libraries to assign a DDC (Dewey Decimal Classification) number to any volume that will allow the book to be found and returned to its proper space within a short length of shelving. This system is used in 200,000 libraries in at least 135 countries.
