20 More Ups than Downs Traditional Cache

This is a pleasant, if initially strenuous, 5.5 mile circular walk through ancient Dartmoor Woodland, tidy farmland, and historical sunken lanes. Going is mostly good, with well tended forest tracks, well marked footpaths and you will be rewarded with amazing views across towards Exmoor and Haldon, especially if you take a short diversion and climb Heltor Rock. Most visitors to Steps Bridge take the easy and flat path north, so this is a much less visited and consequently quieter place to walk.

Notes:

1. Coords: GPS signal in Bridford Woods is very poor due to the deep valley. Consequently I have given clear clues. Readings were taken with an Oregon GPS and averaged over 3+ minutes.
2. Dogs: There are several stiles. Many are dog friendly, but 2 or 3 aren't. Also beware that the trail goes through farmland that has sheep and horses in it. (No cows when I set it in March '13)
3. Going: This is not suitable for buggies, pushchairs or wheelchairs. Although surprisingly dry when set,some parts will be prone to mud in places following rain.
4. Steep: This walk starts with a very long climb. Once up to Heltor Rock, it's mostly flat or downhill with only one moderate climb - so it does get easier!  Total ascents on this walk equal a quarter of Ben Nevis!
5. Peaceful: It's a quiet walk with hides away from houses and muggle areas. Only two short sections are on public roads, the rest bridlepaths and footpaths.
6. Care: You do not need to leave the path to find any cache. This is especially important in the SSSI section through Bridford Woods.
7. Swaps: No swaps were left in the caches when set, nor expected. Whilst mostly small-medium, some caches are micros. These are fitted with waterproof paper to try and minimise maintenance visits.
8. Maps: Openstreetmaps was incomplete for this area when set. I have added all the paths so an update for your GPS may be useful. I have added waymarks where useful, however.
