Geocache Description:

Some years ago we discovered a small and inconsiderable road leading to the southern coast, away from the busy one between Spili and Agia Galini. Since this time we came back here each year we visited Crete. Even if streets are getting wider, better and more frequented, we really enjoyed driving along this road in either direction with it's scenic view and the unique seasonal colours of the nature. We realised that the real beauty and uniqueness of Crete gets apparent if you also turn your view towards the back country of the island and not away from it.

We would recommend to go down to Agios Pavlos and Triopetra where you can find beautiful beaches, some nice tavernas AND - last but not least - some great caches like 'Triopetra', 'Agios Pavlos' and 'The Earthcache Aghios Pavlos'. On your way back you will have a perfect light to have some breathtaking views (as you can see on the attached photos) towards the high mountain ranges of Mount Kedros and the far Psiloritis. With a little luck having some wind from the north you might be witness of a remarkable and photogenic event of local weather when clouds are falling down the mountain ridge of Mount Kedros and disappear on their way down the steep hillsides according to meteorologic rules.

So, this was the easy part of the story ... After our holidays, back home, it took some time to find the right words to introduce this cache. Trying to get some more information about this region we took 'A closer look…' and realised what happened behind the mountain ridge of Mount Kedros in the middle of the nineteen-forties in world war II. It was not so easy to write something about this beautiful and peaceful nature, getting aware of the countless offenses against humanity which took place in former days exactly in this area.

for further information see for example:

We named this cache "A closer look…" because we want you to take some time, sit down here, get part of this whole scenery and take "A closer look…" at the peaceful eternity of this landscape on the one hand and the barbarity which took place in this peaceful looking area behind Mount Kedros - which should never be forgotten - on the other hand.

You now may understand, that after taking 'this' closer look, the intention of our small cache changed dramatically from a 'simple scenic one' to (as well) a kind of memorial cache.

Please take it as this and play your part to never let things like this happen again anymore!

(As we are no native english writing geocachers we hope we found the proper words to express what the intention of this cache should be)

Nevertheless the cache is hidden and you have to remove 'something' to get it – please do this carefully! We recommend to be very carefully grabing in holes or other unclear aeras – especially if you are searching together with your kids. You should know that there are some kind of animals which could harm you more or less. It is not very likely to encounter these animals while you are on your cache tour. But it is better to know about any possible risks!

Many thanks to WIND&WATER for supporting our cache in case maintenance is needed!

We wish you happy hunting!
