Geocache Description:

Private George Shannon was the youngest member of the Corps of Discovery Expedition. On August 26, 1804 Shannon and George Drouillard were sent to round up the expedition’s strayed horses near present day St. James, Nebraska. Drouillard returned the following day saying he couldn’t find the horses or Shannon. Shannon was lost! On September 11th, the keelboat crew spotted him on the shore, barely alive, after he had been lost for 16 days. See more of Shannon’s story in the Pvt. George Shannon Trail brochure and on the National Park Service Signs located at the 16 featured communities of the Shannon Trail. A special Pvt. Shannon Geocaching Trail with over 120 caches placed over the 180 mile route has been prepared for your enjoyment.

(Revised May, 2014) AFTER ONE YEAR, THE ORIGINAL CONTEST HAS BEEN DISCONTINUED, but you may still earn a Pvt. Shannon prize as a reward for completion of finding a majority of the caches along the trail. It will not be necessary to collect the code letters and complete the “secret message”, just e-mail Pvt.Shannon from the geocaching.com website and notify his assistants that you have found a majority (over 60 caches) of the Pvt. Shannon Geocaching Trail caches. Your quantity of finds will be verified, and if you qualify a Pvt. Shannon token will be mailed to you (be sure to provide a mailing address in your e-mail request). The Pvt. Shannon Geocaching Trail Group will continue to provide these original prizes as long as supplies last.

See www.shannontrail.com or a Pvt. Shannon Trail brochure for the map of the Pvt. Shannon Geocaching Trail. Add to your fun by visiting some of the attractions listed for each of the 16 towns.
