4-14-14 update: The original cache was muggled, so the cache is now at the site of the town. Lots of relics nearby if you look. From the cache we explored up the hill a few hundred feet, but the town was on both sides of the road all along it. Where do you think the actual mill was? Or the dam for the mill pond?
A short hike up the old Palmer Mill Road will bring you to an old gated road going down to a bridge over Bridal Veil Creek.
After studying old maps, old pics, and good old Google Earth I figured this was the best spot to go looking for relics of the past. Didn't figure, however, on the very modern logging operation taking place on the North side of the creek.
Looking at Google Earth, the very defined logging road just up the hill from Bridal Veil Creek makes a rectangle up a side creek off Bridal Veil. Here is where I think the mill and town used to be, and the road used to be the tressled railroad. In one of the old pics you can see the 90 deg. turn at the Southeast corner of the "rectangle". We started looking around here with our metal detectors for remains of the mill. After not finding much except an old choker and a pipe, we went back to the Southwest corner. Our detectors found lots of stuff just under the surface, including a bed frame. Lots of broken dishes and glass too. No foundations though or any signs of buildings, which is strange since there used to be over 300 people living here. I even read that the school here was the first in Oregon to have electricity. GC1WDHD has a good timeline and description of the mills at Bridal Veil and here.
