Geocache Description:

Parking is available along De Vries Avenue.  Use caution when crossing any streets.  The suffix, ICU, pays homage to a deceased local geocacher, EyeOfSauron.  This hide was placed using a container salvaged from one of his former hides.  For more information, see crackerjackie’s cache (GC3AEXV).

The Perimeter Highway is the name given to two highways that together circle the City of Winnipeg, establishing the city’s unofficial boundaries.  The northern “half” of the perimeter is Manitoba PTH 101, while the southern “half” is both Manitoba PTH 100 as well as the main route of the Trans-Canada Highway as it bypasses Winnipeg (as opposed to the route that travels through the city).  The “handoff” between these two highways occurs at Portage Avenue on the western leg, and Fermor Avenue at the southeast corner.

The Perimeter Highway was originally constructed in 1955, though certain sections, including the overpass at Pembina Highway and the southern bridge over the Red River, were not completed for a few more years.  When construction ceased, there was no roadway in the northeast corner between Lagimodiere Boulevard (PTH 59) and Dugald Road (PTH 15), as it was thought that traffic could reliably use other routes to navigate that corner of the city.  The northeast section was finally completed in the mid-1990s, establishing a continuous 90 km roadway encircling the city.

The Perimeter Highway features three major bridges.  One bridge crosses the Assiniboine River on the western leg, between Portage Avenue to the north and Roblin Boulevard to the south.  Two bridges span the Red River; one on the southern leg between Pembina Highway to the southwest and St. Mary’s Road to the northeast, and the other on the northern leg (visible from GZ) between Main Street to the northwest and Henderson Highway to the southeast.

This hide happened hurriedly, so the logbook had to be improvised.  Please take care to replace the cache just as you found it.

Congratulations to goldfinch99 for the FTF!
