What an absolute disaster!  Having a picnic with my kids and another family's kids in this nice little park had seemed a great idea at the time.  We'd brought two big baskets of food with at least seven bottles of soft drink, and what seemed like 30 bags of chips and, oh, let's say, a few hundred or so left over Easter eggs.  We brought all kinds of sports gear too, with 152 songs and 55 apps on their electronic devices just in case they got "bored" and even a goodly number of little board games.  I was pretty confident they wouldn't need any electronic babysitters though; surely they would just want to go and jump on the playground equipment, especially that little petrol station - it looks pretty cool!
Anyway, we had barely arrived before the trouble began: Dylan managed to shut his hand in the gate and started crying; Miranda was staring at her new watch and walked into a pole; and then Tristan yelled he was going to run right up to the end of the park where he set off the neighbour's dog which made him cry too!  So that was a great start.
Just when we'd settled down from all those dramas, things got even worse.  Miranda was still focussed on her watch and walked into another pole; then Declan and Tristan, having grabbed some sticks for a swordfight, somehow swatted each other in the face simultaneously, drawing blood; and finally Verity, who was playing soccer with me, took a dive... straight into the muddiest part of the ground, ruining her outfit.
I was seriously about to explode when the sky did it for me: with a burst of thunder, down came a torrent of rain and we all ran for cover, eventually deciding we may as well call it a day. When we got home, I realised that I'd left a logbook and pencil behind somewhere - but there was no way in the world I was going back for them.
Worst. Picnic. Ever.
